Conservatory room

Apartment extension in Amsterdam (NL)

A ground floor apartment opens up to the garden step by step by the increasing size of each space while walking through.
The messy original layout is restructured into an apartment with a wide variety of spatial qualities. From a heavy brickwork facade and classical hallway it slowly opens up to the light-filled conservatory room. It was presented with a BIG-BIGGER-BIGGEST concept to organise all the required spaces.

A central dining area connects all the daily spaces. The biggest intervention is the new build extension in the back. It makes a subtle transition by going one step down into a conservatory-like room with floor tot ceiling sliding doors on two sides and large roof lights.

By not making the extension as wide as the existing building, a patio is left over which brings light into the bedroom. This space is made to a minimum, with a cosy reading nook looking into the patio and a beautiful visual connection with the conservatory room.

The back of the house is really sereen and calm. The front of the house is more active with the entrance and a larger office-come-television room, looking out at the Rembrandtpark at the other side of the street.
