DIY art shed

Artist studio in Almere Oosterwold (NL)

An industrial artist studio in a rural landscape with fuzzy views.

This artist studio mirrors the DIY rural house on the other side of the semi-public garden of Oosterwold. Its clear volume is arranged in such a way that the garden maintains its maximum scale and depth and where both buildings still together embraces the landscape.

The studio has a big sloped roof towards the garden, making it modest seen from the house. Instead of the pent roof on the house we applied an uneven gabled roof to create an efficient sun facing part with solar panels. In this way we are able to use the studio as a complimenting object that also powers up the house. In this regard the studio has a lower more informal garden side and a higher formal street side.
A big single, translucent opening faces the north, to get the best lighting for making arts, creating an impressionist view inside at daytime and an exciting effect on the outside at night.

Windows are carefully placed, so future adaptations of the inner space are possible. It started out as a big open space with a toilet en kitchenette, with loads of free space for storage and work space. Future spaces that were considered are a mezzanine, separate ateliers and living space.

The horizontal placed corrugated cladding are the industrial equivalent of the horizontal slats of the house and mimic the plowed land as it was before.
